CAPTAIN COLD
Real Name: Leonard Snart Age: thirty-six Gender: male Rank: rogue Affiliations: The Rogues
Appearance:
The Costume Now that Len has the ability to create and manipulate ice, Gambi decided that his costume needed a new look, a decision that wasn't just for fashion sake but so it could offer Len greater manoeuvrability as he tests and stretches his new powers. The old parker has been replaced with a light but durable hooded vest, a needed change as Len now needs his arms and hands bare. Other than that, the rest of the costume is more snugly fitted for easier movement and more protection, and he still wears protective boots and eyewear. Unsurprisingly the colour scheme is still blue and white.
The Civilian There were some changes to Len’s appearance after the incident that gave the man his abilities. Len still stands a couple inches taller than six foot, and he still has that well defined muscle that makes him cut quite the intimidating figure. He is still a Caucasian male, but his hair has become a near white blonde and his eyes, that were once a warm brown, are now an almost ethereal ice blue. He doesn’t let his stubble grow out as much now, but even on the days he forgets to shave it isn’t as noticeable anymore. Personality:
The Protective Brother This is a trait that perhaps defines Len most, especially where his sister is concerned. Len is a ridiculously protective man, and may God help you if you harm or wrong his little sister. He is protective of his Rogues as well, but not to the same extent. Everything else Len believes in is thrown out the window when Lisa is in trouble. He would tear down both Keystone and Central City just to keep her safe.
The Sort'a Chivalrous Len is sort of chivalrous. You have to remember this man can still be incredibly blunt, has a sharp manner and swears like a sailor, though. Even so, despite that, he can be respectful and he refuses to harm women or children.
The Self-Reliant Leader Independent and a man who prefers to handle his own issues, Len is extremely self-reliant. The Rogues might be a team, and it might be his leadership capabilities that keep them together, but Len has a tendency to strike out on his own when dealing with personal matters. It doesn’t matter how much he might trust one of his Rogues, he just isn’t the kind of man to ask for help.
The Dependable Backup Although Len is an independent man, and someone who doesn’t like to count on others where he can help it, he is both dependable and reliable. He would be right there with Cold Gun drawn if any of his Rogues needed a hand, and they all trust that word. Even Heatwave who is often at odds with Captain Cold.
The Veracious Bastard Blunt to the point of being occasionally crude and even cruel, Len doesn’t see much point in white lies, the stretching of truth, or other such nonsense that is more trouble than it’s worth. He’s an honest person and isn’t about to cover hard facts from anyone -- he certainly isn’t about to sugar-coat it with half fibs and softened words.
The Retaliatory Man Len is a firm believer in lex talionis; the law of retaliation. It is the basic idea behind the eye for an eye principal, and is one of the rules that has made Len such a dangerous man to those who would cross him or his Rogues. If you harm him or any of the people under his lead, he will hunt you down and repay the favour.
The Cynical and World Weary Life is a bitch, people are dishonest and hypercritical, and then you die. Len knows this. He has known this since he was a kid, and those old lessons have stuck with him well into his adult years. He knows better than to trust people until they prove themselves. He knows better than to trust a legal system that hires hypocrites. He knows better than to give a fuck when the world can take away the one thing you care about.
The Deadpan Snarker Surprise, surprise Len does have a sense of humour under all that cold. He just happens to be a creature of deadpan delivery and sarcasm with a particular dryness to it. He is a little too world weary to indulge in other kinds of humour, and a part of him is quite thankful for that. He would never forgive himself if he ever found Trickster’s stupidity amusing.
The Street Wise Len had street smarts beaten into him when he was a boy. It’s the only thing he has to thank his father for, though it’s always with a sardonic tone whenever he might mention it. He knows how dangerous urban life and bad neighbourhoods can be, and he knows how to conduct himself when in those situations.
Powers:
Ice Manipulation After a particular mishap, it would appear Len has become a brand of meta-human. He can create and manipulate ice, and, with his years of experience, it is an ability he has adapted to incredibly quickly. He knows how to use these powers in the same ways he used his sidearm and grenades, and now that he can create ice himself he is constantly coming up with inventive new ways to put these abilities to work. Abilities:
Genius Level Intellect Len might not use the best language in the world, but this does not make him an unintelligent man. It just means he doesn’t care and thinks the grammar Nazis can kiss his arse. He invented his weapons. Mastered absolute zero. And has an intimate knowledge of chemistry and what extremely low temperatures can do to the human body.
Natural Born Leader Despite his harsh mannerisms and his occasional gruff demeanour, Len is a natural born leader. Somehow he has managed to keep the Rogues together through years of hardship and bullshit, and though they’ve had their foundations rocked on occasion, they are still a group that looks out for each other. The bonds he’s forged between his Rogues are not fragile things.
Indomitable Will Batman and the Green Lanterns can move over, because a man with true inner strength and a will to carry on is Leonard Snart. He is stubborn as hell and moves forward no matter how much trouble, heartache and bullshit might rock his world and turn it upside-down.
Incredible Marksmanship Although his skill in marksmanship isn’t on the same level as individuals such as Deadshot, Len is still an impeccable shot and his aim is something someone truly shouldn't scoff at. We’re talking about a man who has fought the Flash for years, both Barry Allen and Wally West, and who has been known to hit them on far more than one occasion.
Advanced Reflexes Because of his years as Captain Cold, Len's nervous system has developed reflexes that enable him to compensate for the Flash's speed. This means he has a better chance than anyone else of tackling the speedster when he's in a dead run.
Advanced Strength Len has the build, strength and stamina of a man who works out daily. It has been shown that he can easily haul another man, of similar height and weight, above his head and toss them without trouble. Do you know what this means? That muscle mass ain't just for show. Equipment:
Cold Gun This is the weapon that has earned Len his title as the man who mastered absolute zero; a sidearm he invented and keeps at his hip as Captain Cold. This gun can allow him to completely freeze people, slow runners and create walls of ice. Those who find themselves frozen can be thawed without too much trouble, as Len rarely fires with murder in mind.
Cold Grenades These grenades are newer weapons, kept attached to his belt where they are in immediate reach. They are far more potent than the firearm he carries and are used rarely because of this fact. The chemical reaction caused by these grenades is enough to completely encase a building like Iron Heights in ice.
» Now that Len has powers, he is less likely to carry weapons.
Snowblind Glasses Whenever he wears the Captain Cold costume, Len also wears a pair of snowblind glasses. This is to protect his eyes from the flash his gun makes when it fires, as well as the glare off the ice he creates. There is a slight disadvantage to them however, as they interfere with his peripheral vision.
Captain Cold Costume While Len doesn’t always agree with Gambi and his taste in clothes, he has faith in the man and his genius as a tailor. The Captain Cold costume is a perfect example of what Gambi is capable of, as it protects Len against cold, ice, and offers some minimal protection against what the Flash and other Rogues can dish out. Weaknesses:
Human Physiology Len is pretty much a normal human, so even though he is a resilient man and a tough bastard to kill, he can be injured and killed in all the unpleasant ways a normal human can be harmed and killed. Just be ready for one hell of a fight if you try to take this Rogue out.
His Little Sister When Lisa is in trouble Len is blind to everything else. This isn’t an overestimation of his protectiveness, and instead is cold, hard fact. Len is a big brother before he is anything else, and when his little sister needs him nothing else is more important. His Rogue rules and usual morals aren’t important. The other Rogues aren’t important. And neither is anyone or anything else.
His Rogues Although his protectiveness over his Rogues isn’t as blind as his protectiveness over his sister, he still looks out for them when they are in trouble. Len is not against tracking down and beating the shit out of anyone who has harmed them, or those that might frame them for crimes they didn’t commit. He is a leader and looks after those under his charge, even when they’re an argumentative pain in the arse like Heatwave.
Moral Compass Len would call himself a rogue and an anti-hero but never a villain. He doesn’t believe in that shit. He’s been around long enough to know that black and white don’t exist, as morality is a spectrum of different shades of grey. He has little against fighting the Flash and stealing from banks, but don’t ever ask him to harm women, children or take from those with nothing to give. This moral compass can be taken advantage of.
Soaked Through and Thoroughly Annoyed While his new abilities to manipulate ice and cold are incredibly useful, they are their own weakness. Len can’t control them very well if his clothes are soaked through and his skin is damp from rain or from being dunked in a body of water. In fact his abilities tend to reverse back on him when he’s wet. Len takes this in his stride, but it can stop him from fighting effectively.
His Alcoholism This will never be a problem for Len during a fight, as he has enough self-restraint not to drink when he’s about to commit a crime or get himself into a scuffle, but it is a personal problem and weakness, one Len has a menagerie of hangups over. He has become a bit of an alcoholic, just like his good for nothing bastard father was, and that leads to all kinds of guilt and bad feelings.
History:
The man who raised Len went to work each day in a blue uniform and with handcuffs on his belt, prepared to serve and protect the public, but he was also a man who returned home each evening to drink and beat his children. He was the furthest thing from a father to his son and daughter, and to protect his sister Len bore the brunt of his wrath. It is this abuse that left Len with a mistrust towards authority and the hypercritical bullshit those with badges preach.
What his father did forced Len to grow into maturity years before he became a teenager, because his little sister needed her older brother to be strong, grownup, and someone who could look after her. So he did the best he could to be the parent she needed. He took his father’s abuse, protected his sister as much as he could, and was the one who made sure she was fed and taken to school. He was the one that picked up the bottles of beer and the cigarettes to make sure Lisa wouldn’t find them.
When he reached his upper teens something snapped. Despite his little sister and the responsibility he felt toward her, he told her to stay put, where she at least had a roof over her head, and left home. It was a decision he felt guilt over, but he couldn’t head back and he couldn’t take Lisa with him either. Their father might be a bastard but she had a home with him. She could still finish school and could still accomplish her goals.
Len, on the other hand, would turn to crime. He had no faith in law or what the police liked to preach, not when their system could hire people like his father and never prosecute them, so his decision was the last screw you to his dear old dad. He started with a bank heist. He learnt how to use a pistol, found he could puzzle out complicated plans, and almost succeeded in his very first stint as a criminal. There was just one problem: he hadn’t expected some speedster freak would dislocate his jaw.
A quick trip to the hospital lead to a quick trip to jail, and, while he was incarcerated in Central City Penitentiary, he learnt of the cyclotron. It was this device that gave him the inspiration to build the Cold Guns he uses today. He escaped, hid, and collected what he needed to build his weapons. He had calculated that cold and ice would be best suited to combat the Flash if he ever ran into the man again. He became the man who mastered absolute zero and perhaps the most prominent rival to the runner that protected the twin cities.
Over his years as a Rogue, what he did, the chase, and every heist he pulled developed into a game and coping device. He collected others who needed the same outlet he did along the way, and that is what would make the Rogues different to other criminal groups. Len would even develop a mutual respect with both Barry Allen and Wally West, even while he remained a rival and criminal.
A mistake, a bad decision to trust the wrong person, and the incident that gave him his abilities would see his own Rogues turn on him, kick him off his own team, and throw away years of almost-friendship. To say Len is bitter would be an understatement, and now, for the moment, he is unsure what to do with himself. His criminal lifestyle is familiar, but there's less of a point without his team.
RP Sample:
Leonard Snart was Captain Cold, Rogue leader and... current babysitter. That was how he felt at least, as he watched Mick and Axel shout insults at each other from across the room, too caught up in their argument to notice that their leader watched from the doorway. Mick was supposed to be an adult. Axel was a teenager nearing twenty. Both looked like a couple of mouthy toddlers about now.
“You idiots done?” His question was almost a bored drawl as he leant against the doorframe, appearing terribly casual despite the noise. In truth he considered whether he should kick the two out and leave the police to deal with them. Their recent heist had the boys in blue on their tails at the moment, and a trip to the penitentiary would be a lesson learned. Len wouldn’t even feel obligated to break them out, at least not for a day or two.
Mick had been a Rogue longer than Axel, and the man knew to spare his leader a suspicious look, eyes narrowed. Len might sound casual and unbothered, but Mick knew what kind of threat that lazy, Missouri drawl could hide. Especially when their leader addressed them with an insult while he took the cap off his beer.
Axel had not been a Rogue as long and was also a headstrong teenager, so, despite the times Len had loomed over him, he still blew a raspberry at their leader. He wasn’t quite twenty yet, and that meant he was allowed to be an immature pain in the arse, apparently. Len bit back a scoff in favour of taking a swig of his beer.
“You keep arguin’ like that, and you’ll have to hide from the cops above ground.” In other words he would make good on his mental threat and kick them out of the Rogue basement, and then they would have to find somewhere else, while in costume and while the police were looking for them. Len wouldn’t care either. He would enjoy the peace before he went to fetch their arses from jail.
Len had turned away then, with the mind to retrieve a cigarette carton from the pocket of his parka, but instead he went very, very still after a slinky collided with the back of his head. Axel had thrown it, of course. Axel had over stepped himself. Axel was about to get his Goddamn arse handed to him. Len fixed both the teenage boy and Heatwave with a dark look, set his beer aside, and then stalked forward.
Marco turned to a new page in his book and sighed. Other Characters: Pied Piper, Weather Wizard
